ABOUT EMMA

EMMA’S STORY

Emma always knew she was different. She had and still has a love for dance, music, fashion, photography and art, which all seems pretty normal, but add in the fact that she has a very rare eye disease that no one ever had any straight answers for and suddenly you can maybe start to understand why Emma felt so different from everyone else.

Emma never really truly understood her eye condition until her late teens and would constantly wonder why she had to try so much harder than everyone else to do even the most simple tasks. She would ask herself why she couldn’t ever catch a ball in sports, keep a straight line even on lined paper, feel blinded by piercing bright lights when she performed on stage or even manage to recognise her own friends and family, but yet she always found a way and had the determination to never give up.

This drive to achieve and make her friends, family and of course herself proud, continued into adulthood where Emma struggled to find work and decide what she really wanted to do with her life. Despite achieving much higher grades than her teachers ever predicted and gaining 3 A-levels, no one seemed to want to take Emma on after realising she was now almost legally blind.

She didn’t understand why. She might of done things in a different way to the norm but did this really matter if she was still able to get the job done?

Emma quickly started to lose confidence in herself until she came across a class called Pilates. From the very first class, Emma was hooked. It was slow and controlled enough for Emma to keep up with the class and also had this amazing way of bringing her more mind and body awareness then she could ever imagine. Being able to see clearly didn’t matter anymore. All she had to do was listen and feel her body move.

Within the next few weeks Emma enrolled onto an accessible Pilates instructor course and never looked back. Emma passed with flying colours and went straight into teaching and setting up her own business.

Just Unique Pilates (now Guided Pilates) was born. Emma was able to show people how nothing could ever stop them, there was an option for everyone and no challenge was ever too big for her.

Emma has now been teaching Pilates for almost 10 years and will continue to help motivate, empower and inspire others to believe in themselves through the Guided Pilates Method.

Emma also recently qualified (2021) with her beautiful guide dog Archie who has brought even more confidence, love and happiness to Emma’slife. Archie now shares a mat with Emma at every Pilates class.
